Hi Team,

I’m trying to get a better picture of how I can help those with T1D operating in the Maritime sector. I would like to float a few questions and see if anyone can help.

- Who are the current Diabetic Specialist Advisors to DVLA, MCA and CAA?

- Are there any other seafarers on here who would share their story with T1D and restricted operation?

- Does anyone know of any recent studies regarding CGMs and their use in any of the mentioned industries?

I was diagnosed a year ago with T1D. After operating privately for the last few months I have a greater understanding of how easily the condition is managed in the marine environment. My license is up for renewal and I would like to continue working in world wide waters so this is the next hurdle.

Understanding what risk mitigation can be done to update current restrictions.

Any information or input would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum @The-diabetic-captain

I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to your questions. I wonder whether it might partly be complicated by the international nature of the role and the different jurisdictions involved?

There are some general pointers about work and diabetes (rights and responsibilities) from a UK context here:

Things certainly seem to he changed in recent years, particularly with the advent of more widespread access to CGM.

eg People with diabetes are now able to drive and fly commercially, with appropriate evidence of glucose management and monitoring.

It might be worth investigating the situation with commercial airline pilots if you are finding it hard to find maritime information - there would seem to be some overlap?
