Hi

I've been T1 for 13 years and have just been diagnosed with UC. While I'm waiting for referral to clinic has anyone got any experience and advice for managing these 2 conditions together?

Hi Amy.
Sorry to see your have been diagnosed with UC I hadn't heard of it so had to look it up,sounds like it can be very nasty when it flares up. I can't offer any personal experience but I'm sure someone on here has more of an experience with it then me.

Hope the referral doesn't take to long.

Welcome to the forum Amy Worrall.

Hello again @Amy Worrall I'm not going to be as much help as I'd like as I was diagnosed UC and D at the same time so for me having the 2 is situation normal. One thing to watch out for is a flare up of the UC which may require steroids. These can really mess your levels up.

Hi Amy, welcome to the forum.

I've had type1 for 21 years, and UC for 20 and a half years. By and large, the two conditions live reasonably well side by side, but as kshkel says, if you need steroid treatment, that will send your diabetes haywire with raised BG. This is manageable, and either Kshkel or I can tell you how to do it.

When I was first diagnosed, although the whole of the colon was involved, I wasn't put on steroids first line because of the D. High doses of Mesalazine and prednisolone foam enemas (easier to use than it sounds) got things under control. It is a chronic relapsing condition, but it can be kept at bay with regular medication.

If you have any questions that you'd rather not ask in public, I'm happy for you to contact me by PM, but most of the gang on here are are immune to embarrassment anyway.

Just as a useful tip, avoid the UC forums, they tend to get a bit depressing. Most people with this condition just carry on regardless, and learn off by heart the location of every public use toilets in town. It's the only reason I ever went in McDonalds. Honest.

We'll try and answer any questions you have. It's always a bit worrying embarking on a new diagnosis, especially when it involves thing like colonoscopy, but don't worry. It's doable.
