Hello Everyone,

I am wanting to put together a list of sports websites that cater for diabetics for both adults and children. Is anyone able to give me some? I have already found www.runsweet.com which is great.

runsweet is the best- Ive met Dr Ian Gallen from taking part in an exercise study of his. I also have a website for my personal training- its not finished yet but Im putting a diabetes section up as its the area I want to specialize in. www.paulbfitness.co.uk

Some time in the future Id like to be set up to do some workshops, lectures, and exercise sessions, classes with diabetics to get them into it- we all know how important exercise is to a healthy lifestyle- especially us diabetics!!!

Boysie, just wanted to say good luck with your aims. I'd love to see more people like you specialising in diabetes

My own experience of exercise professionals showed me how scared some are of dealing with Type 2 diabetes. I'd been using my local gym for some time and then was diagnosed with Type 2 and informed them of a chnage in my medical status. Result was immediate - needed a doctor's say so before I did more than walk (slowly) on the treadmill there as I might have a hypo. As my Hb1Ac was 11.2 at the time and my before breakfast levels usually well above 13, I tried to explain this was highly unlikely but with little joy.

Found other solutions to my exercise needs as a result that work better for me than the gym in any case and are far less costly than membership fees for the only local gym. Irony is that this is a gym that offers the GP referral scheme but when I asked at my GPs about that was told that they don't refer people with diabetes, just those with diagnosed heart disease!

Hi Vanessa

Good to hear of your experiences in the gym...Unfortunately it sounds like the gym instructors in there are a bit ignorant- and Im wondering how they managed to get the Gp referral qualification! Its also a bit of a joke that the GP referral scheme is not set up for diabetics- I really believe that we should be one of the top priorities for that...and even if its just for diagnosed heart disease...isn't this what we are trying to prevent in our diabetics- the complications such as heart disease!!? When are these people who make up the rules gonna realise that lots can be done to prevent the future complications!

Vanessa- feel free to contact me any time for advice or a chat! Perhaps one day the government will realise how important this exercise malarky actually is!!
