According to new research published online June 24, New England Journal of Science and Medicine, losing weight may not have a significant impact on morbidity rates for those with type 2 diabetes. While weight loss is recommended for overweight or obese type 2 diabetics so as to achieve a decreased risk of heart disease and stroke, the long-term effects of weight loss on death rates from cardiovascular disease have been previously untested. Initially intended to follow patients up to 13.5 years, the Look AHEAD (Action for Health in Diabetes) clinical trial was stopped early as researchers believed past the median 9.6 years further analysis was futile in determining any significant impact in reduced mortality.
