I am newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes and I have heard that if a diabetic is poorly then it can affect the blood sugars.

In what way can it affect them and what can be done to help?

Everybody will react in different ways, for some people it increases blood glucose and other have mentioned it actually lowers then. I think it will depend very much on what the illness is.
People who take insulin have 'sick day ' rules to help them under those circumstances.
Keeping an eye on what your blood glucose is, by testing with your home monitor can help you respond appropriately
