Hello everyone,

My name is Jo I am 70 years old have been type 2 since I was 48 have been on insulin since I was 57, and I have problems with high blood pressure, about four weeks ago (7/2/2024) my Doctor put me on Indapamide MR 1.5mg tablets which are diuretics, ten days later I had a really bad bladder infection I was put on a course of anti biotics for 7 days which cleared the high fever but not the symptoms of a bladder infection, I still have the pain of a bladder infection after finishing the anti biotics on the 27th February, I stopped taking the diuretics as soon as I realised it was them that had caused the infection, this is the second time I have been given diuretics and is the second time I have had a bladder infection caused by them, I am a bit concerned that the tablets have caused some sort of damage to my bladder, oh and they also raised my glucose levels, the highest my glucose levels normally are 8 to 9 but they have been up to 15 since taking these tablets, has anyone had or heard of anything like this before, I would be really grateful for any replies.

Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear that you have been struggling with a bladder infection and that you suspect your BP tablets. The high BG levels are as likely to be due to the infection as to the medication. When our body if fighting an infection, our liver secretes extra glucose to give our body energy to fight the infection and without extra insulin our BG levels rise. Many of us on insulin have been given "Sick Day Rules" which are guidance on how to manage our BG with insulin during illness and when to monitor ketone levels and what to do if they are raised. Many of us need to increase our insulin doses during these times.
Have you spoken to your Dr about the problems you have had with the new medication and asked for an alternative?

Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your reply, I am already on the highest dose of Ramapril and taking a Beta Blocker for blood pressure, over the last 8 weeks I have been given at least 4 different tablets as alternatives but each one affects me in different ways usually give me the runs I have Diverticular disease and my stomach doesn't take to well to new tablets. I wouldn't know how to monitor ketone levels but I have altered the amount of insulin I take over the last few days I've taken an extra 3 units, I only take insulin once a day at my main meal being a type 2, I spoke to my Doctor on the phone about it last Wednesday but I was non the wiser with what she had to say, I need a rest from the alternative tablets so I will go back to the Doctors next week. Thanks again for your reply.

My best wishes Jo xx

I found going low carb improved my gut problems and it is also found to improve blood pressure for some people who suffer with high BP. ie it reduces it. In fact, some people who have started a low carb diet have suffered falls because their blood pressure dropped too much as their BP medication essentially became an overdose. Of course with you being on insulin, you would have to be very cautions about reducing your carbs slowly if you decided to try that, both to prevent falls from low BP and hypos.

Low carb can be so effective for some Type 2s that they can come off insulin altogether although it has to be gradually reduced as levels come down, rather than just suddenly stopped.

Note sure if you are aware but Type 2 diabetics on insulin can also be prescribed what we call MDI or Multiple Daily Injections with 2 different types of insulin. It is a much more flexible system and can make it easier to lose weight if you need to because you reduce your injections to balance your meals.

Exercise can also improve blood pressure. It doesn't have to be anything particularly exertive. A daily walk is ideal both for blood pressure and diabetes.

Good morning Barbara,
There is some great information here, I'm going to look into a low carb diet, my diet has been terrible over the last eight weeks with all the problems I've had I have been comfort eating.

I wasn't aware about the two types of insulin for type 2's, I only get a check up once a year for eye's, feet, blood and urine tests and I have never been asked how much insulin I take daily, I have had a text from my doctor this morning asking me to put another water sample in for testing, I assume the sample I put in last Wednesday wasn't right.

My Daughter in law is a nurse practitioner and she told me that taking an even short walk a day would help with my blood pressure which I did start doing but since the problems with this medication I haven't felt well enough.

My best wishes

I have been taking indapamide for quite a few years as well as a low dose of Bisoporol for high BP. Luckily I’ve never had any problems with it, I wasn’t aware they could cause UTIs but I do take a prophylactic dose of penicillin as I don’t have a spleen so more likely to get infections, allegedly as, touch wood, I rarely get infections. Like Barbara said it was more likely the infection that rise your BGs. Walking is good for lowering your BP, I walk for miles. I’m with you on changing meds all the time, I also have diverticulitis amongst other gastric issues. It took a lot of different meds to control my BP, I can’t take “prils” took a while to work that out so I was glad when I finally was prescribed something that works. I’ve only had a UTI a couple of times in my almost 64 years and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I hope you can get sorted soon. Elaine.

The important thing with UTIs is getting the correct antibiotic and having a long enough course.
My OH was prescribed co-amoxiclav but then the GP rang after a couple of days and changed nitrofurantoin which is more appropriate and for a 10 day course.

Hello Elaine

When I first got this infection three weeks ago I was told the Chemists could prescribe for UTI's but they can only prescribe for under 64 year olds, I told her that I thought the diuretics I was prescribed had caused the infection as this was the second time I had been prescribed them and the second time I had, had a UTI, she asked me if I was a Diabetic when I said yes she said I shouldn't have been prescribed them with being Diabetic.

I have had high BP for about ten years and over the years I can't count the amount of medication I have been prescribed and non of them have been suitable for me.

I have put another water sample in at the doctors today, , I'll see what that turns up.

My best wishes to you
Jo

Hello,

I was on a 7day course of Trimethoprim two and a half weeks ago but didn't clear it up, I have spoken to my Doctor and put two more water samples in since then, I got a text from the doctors yesterday to ask for a follow up sample of urine I've put that in today so I'll see if that shows up anything.

My best wishes
Jo
