Do you have diabetes and have you been diagnosed with depression?

Would you like to help us understand how people make sense of and manage having both conditions?

Would you like to be entered into a draw for a ?100 gift voucher?
If yes, we would love to hear from you.

Understanding your experiences of diabetes and depression may help us provide better care for people like you.

Research team:
Jenny Mc Sharry, Professor Rona Moss-Morris, Dr Felicity Bishop, Professor Tony Kendrick.

We are researchers at the University of Southampton. We want to understand what it is like to have diabetes and depression, so we have designed a questionnaire which asks how people make sense of and manage both conditions.

All you need to do to help is complete some questionnaires which will take approximately 30 minutes.

Please go to https://www.isurvey.soton.ac.uk/2776 for further information about the study and to complete the questionnaires online.

If you would like a paper copy of the questionnaires or if you would like more information please contact us with a private message.

Thank you!

for the question latest hbA do you want it in old or new mesurments cause i only know it in old which is 7.1%

If you only know the old one that is fine to give that, thank you!

Thank you

How long do you think your diabetes will continue leaves me abit puzzled, it wont go away just cause i take medication or will it and ive missed something??

I carried on regardless and completed the questionaire, i look forward to hearing from you in 2 weeks, hope all of this helps you out in your studies

Cheers

That particular question is taken from a more generic questionnaire developed for use in all types of conditions so it might not apply to diabetes as much. Feel free to comment on that or any other questions using the comment boxes on the questionnaire and we can use the comments to make the questionnaire more relevant in the future!

Thank you I hope it was not problem that i did it in 20 minds and not 30

p.s may i be so bold as to ask what company the ?100 voucher is for? :D

Twenty minutes is fine,we just gave thirty as an estimate.
We're planning to buy the voucher for somewhere quite general, maybe Amazon, so hopefully anyone could find something they like!

I think you've just told us in that one sentence how very little you know about diabetes, thanks. Might have been helpful to your 'audience' really if whoever put the thing together had some VERY basic details of the condition.

Just the sort of thing that makes me even more depressed really TBH. It's bad enough when the very HCP's you get referred to (counsellors in my case) don't have a clue what being diabetic entails, although they can help with strategies to deal with some of ones other probs.

Still the good news is Warwich Uni/WU Medical School have a Diabetes User Group which all research such as this having any reference to diabetes must pass via, and the Group 'weed out' such mistakes, together with suggesting alternative questions which might better get to the heart of th eprobs. I truly wish all Uni's offered the experise of this type of group to all their researchers! I know very well that time is usually of the essence where Theses have to be written - in which case 'our' group are approached to give email advice via the Facilitator.

I did try to complete the Qnr, but the internet went down after just a few pages. (we have on ongoing prob with it, which Virgin deny)

I'll try again tomorrow. Hopefully! LOL

Oh dear I can't take part :(

Why?.........
Well the first question asks if you have been diagnosed with diabetes and depression. I've got the first, but I'm not diagnosed with the second.

It's a shame they don't do a version of the survey for those who are not diagnosed depressed (and don't feel they should be) as a control group.

Thats true but they has been alot of questionaires/surveys on here that have been diabetes related ONLY so I thought it made a change to have depression thrown in the mix as it does effect alot of diabetics, of course I would say that as i have both condotions 🙄

I have completed the questionaire, it took me 20 mins too. Obviously rhe "how long do you think your diabetes will last?" is an odd question, diabetes is treatable but there is no cure and it can't go away, so that is "forever". Also the causes for diabetes is a tricky one, for me, I know that it is a combination of genetics and glandular fever so I don't have a third one - I just put BAD LUCK!

Thanks for giving me the chance to take part, will be great to get feedback when the research progresses. And good luck with the PhD!

Yeah I stuggled with that one to and the same with the 3 reasons for my depression took about 5 minutes for me to think of sumit 🙄

I guess if you had gestational diabetes or had steroid induced diabetes and there was a hope of stopping the steroids you could give a figure - but it would have made more sense to have omitted the question.

That bothers me actually as questionnaire design is difficult and a specialist field. If you don't ask the right questions then you can get meaningless data. I am not saying that this is the case here as I have not looked at the questions.

I think that generally the questions are pretty good and cover everything that I would have expected, it was just those two that were hard, but then you could answer correctly anyway which can be a problem in some surveys.
