The number of diabetics in Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset who have had amputations due to their condition is too high, health bosses have admitted.

About 1,500 procedures to remove limbs were carried out in the four counties over three years.

Charity Diabetes UK said 80% of amputations were avoidable if more care was available to prevent complications.

Health bosses said they were "acutely aware" of the situation and were improving education about diabetes.

I know some people still use syringes, and probably NPH insulin as well, but that photo isn't really representative of diabetes today, is it? Especially given that most people have Type 2, many are told not to test, and the majority are not on insulin... 🙄

What they have also failed to point out is that the SW has a very high proportion of elderly people living down here. Many will not listen or be told how to manage their diabetes.

I live in the SW and still use syringes if ever needed. I do not like the pens full stop.
