Diabetes can’t be that bad can it? I mean it’s not going to kill you and people really do bring it on themselves, don’t they? They shouldn’t have eaten so many sugary desserts.
It’s amazing how often I hear people say these things, but then again it’s hardly surprising. These misconceptions of diabetes have become ingrained in our culture.
Often, unless your life has been touched by diabetes in some way, you may not be aware how serious the condition can be. There are now an estimated 173,000 of us living with diabetes here in Wales, a figure that is rising at the rate of 7,000 people each year.
This doesn’t just have a devastating effect on those being diagnosed and their families; it costs the NHS in Wales £500m each year. That’s 10% of its entire budget.
