Welcome to the forum Jules 🙂

Yes, diabetes is often genetic. My father and uncle have it and my grandfather did have it (we suspect my great grandfather too).

What medication are you only currently, it doesn't sound like the standard metformin to have such a large drop.

Welcome Jules2.

A rapid drop in blood glucose, as 9.1 to 4.2 (presumably finger pricks in mmol/l?) would feel uncomfortable, but good that you're now in normal blood glucose range.

How did you solve your forgotting tablets problem? Others with that problem will find your technique / strategy that useful for themselves.

Any other aspects that you want help with?

Hi Jules, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but the good news is that it can be managed well if you are armed with the right tools and information. I would recommend having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and getting yourself a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these will all give you a good background and understanding of your diabetes and how you can manage it well. Has your doctor or nurse spoken to you about attending a diabetes education course? If not, then do ask as these can be invaluable. A couple of the well known ones are DESMOND and XPert, although there may be a different one run by your PCT. It can be very beneficial learning in the company of others with similar questions and problems to deal with 🙂

If you have any questions or anything is worrying you, please ask here, as there are many experienced and knowledgeable people happy to help. This is also a place for support too, so if you need to have a good old rantwho understand, then go right ahead! I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Hi Jules and a warm welcome to the forum

Hi Jules

Like you I "inherited" type 2. Father & Uncle possibly Grandmother (not diagnosed).

I was diagnosed Sept 10. Although familiar with type 2 still a shock; once my cancer treatment over (type 2 picked up on pre-op tests!). I started to get myself informed to feel in control rather than the diabetes taking over.

Not sure about your situation but I upped my game in the exercise front; looked again at my diet first dianosed by BG was 12.3 after tabs went to 7.3 after exercising for only a few months went to 5.8% & metformin reduced by half so worth the effort if you can.
Took my tabs (I didn't forget but managed to self-dose extra metformin). I found getting hold of a "pill sorter" which covered a week helped as I sorted tabs once a week whilst not being distracted. Since then I've had no problems.

I got hold of the Diabetes first year book a couple of weeks ago & really recommend it. Although diagnosed over a year ago; still picked bits up. Education courses were not even mentioned by my GP practise; I've recently been in touch with the local course set up for those who have been diagnosed for a while called diabetes4wrd & hope to get some dates for the new year.

I love and really admire your determination - its given me the kick up the backside I've needed this week - I've not overindulged but have been pretty lazy (week off work and made the most of it) so tomorrow I'm going to brush myself down and start again.... 🙂

Me too. I've put some weight on - not a lot- eaten mince pies, chocolate and all sorts of things I shouldn't - I guess I 'm in denial to be honest , I must get back on track ! Fortunately I am such a routine person that I always take my meds, so that's something 🙂

when i was first dx i was put on what was the standard 3x 500mg metformin and 20mg simstatin ...i did not feel good but struggled ..then after 3 months i accidentally ran into my DSN who took one look and said you need to see GP ...did so and was taken off statin and the metformin reduced imediately to just 1x 500mg ...I would suggest you may need them get to fine tune your meds x good luck
