Hi Jules
Like you I "inherited" type 2. Father & Uncle possibly Grandmother (not diagnosed).
I was diagnosed Sept 10. Although familiar with type 2 still a shock; once my cancer treatment over (type 2 picked up on pre-op tests!). I started to get myself informed to feel in control rather than the diabetes taking over.
Not sure about your situation but I upped my game in the exercise front; looked again at my diet first dianosed by BG was 12.3 after tabs went to 7.3 after exercising for only a few months went to 5.8% & metformin reduced by half so worth the effort if you can.
Took my tabs (I didn't forget but managed to self-dose extra metformin). I found getting hold of a "pill sorter" which covered a week helped as I sorted tabs once a week whilst not being distracted. Since then I've had no problems.
I got hold of the Diabetes first year book a couple of weeks ago & really recommend it. Although diagnosed over a year ago; still picked bits up. Education courses were not even mentioned by my GP practise; I've recently been in touch with the local course set up for those who have been diagnosed for a while called diabetes4wrd & hope to get some dates for the new year.
