Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed last July as type 1. Just had my second consultation and they now think that I have diabetes 1.5 - they did call it something else but the name was too long to remember. Anyway apparently nothing changes other than to carry on as at now. Also put on statins as cholesterol too high at 5.7 which ironically is the lowest it has ever been. Confused........🙂

Hi Polo, I suspect that the 'other' name was LADA - Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adulthood. Basically, it's like a slow-onset Type 1, so the treatment can vary from a more straightforward T1 as you are probably still producing some of your own insulin. What treatment are you on? There are quite a few T1.5s here so you're in good company!

As for the statins, well they do like us diabetics to have a total cholesterol below 4.0, although a lot will depend on the breakdown of that number. My last cholesterol level was 5.2, but because a good proportion is the 'good' HDL cholesterol then my consultant agreed I could stay off the statins.

Thanks. I'm on nova rapid and levimur. Amounts of nova vary depending upon what I'm eating. Levimur is 8 at night.

Ah, that's good. How are you finding things with adjusting your doses? Are you getting good levels or many hypos?

Not too bad thanks. I recently got the carbs and cals book which has helped greatly. Levels in the morning are typically 5.0 to 6.5 and pre-meals between 4.5 and 6.5. I still get the odd hypo but only 3.8 so not too bad likewise odd high after eating something I shouldn't - usually get caught out by sauces !! 😱

Those are good readings 🙂 Have you got a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas? I found it very useful when I was diagnosed, and still do 5 years on. The title is a bit misleading, it doesn't just apply to young people - I was 49 at diagnosis! 😱
