Hundreds of children and teenagers in England have type 2 diabetes, data shows, leading charities to describe the findings as a “worrying wakeup call” and urge that childhood obesity be tackled.

Type 2 diabetes has historically only been diagnosed in people over the age of 40, but data for 2019-20 reveals that the condition affects 1,560 people aged 18 or under.

It is known to be more severe in young people, and only 30% of sufferers receive the care they should, a report from NHS Digital found.

The data confirms a growing trend of serious health conditions related to obesity. Nearly one in three children aged two to 15 are overweight or obese.

Chris Askew, the chief executive of Diabetes UK, said it was shocking for even one child to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and called the figures “a sad indictment of the health of our nation”.

Given that there are at least 12 million folk 18 and under in the UK, 1560 in England is hardly a panic stations, is it?

I also don’t believe the 1 in 3 overweight or obese, for this reason - overweight and obese are two distinct conditions, overweight is a very broad category, obese isn’t, so combining the two together is statistically a basic error. My younger brother was just a tad overweight at junior school, but grew up, and remains, as thin as a lath.

It’s also wrong to combine overweight and obese because the risk of T2 increases exponentially if you are obese, but not if you are simply a bit overweight. I bet all those 1560 are obese. Concentrate on that is the right thing to do.

I have grandchildren - they are told how healthy cereal and fruits are, how they should cut back on meat and fat - to save the planet. Their snacks are processed grain and dried fruit - so naturally any problem with glucose is going to start the accumulation of fat at an earlier age each generation.

When I was at school only four children were "fat" during my whole time in primary school. One passed at 30 and another was in poor health 20 years ago. I now only have contact with one person from those days and neither of us have any contact with anyone from those faraway days. In grammar school it probably averaged 1 in 30 (i.e. one per class). Looking at licalschools I do not believe 1 in 3 as it seems to be around 1 in 10. Some of those are far heftier than those "fat" kids were. Everybody knows that obese is unhealthy! The problem is there is too much ultra processed calorific food cheaply available combined with stupid media output about positive body image for the obese! And why are so many TV presenters so chubby? Me "fattist" - definitely!

Same at my school - one fat kid in every class. They usually found their niche in the rugby teams, where it was applauded to be big and heavy, and quite unlike the super-fit muscle-bound bruisers you see in the modern game 🙂
