Today at lunchtime (9th August) I got my referral letter through for DESMOND, the course date in my area was Friday 9th August 🙄.

I phoned the administrator on the letter and was told it wont be back in my area until the new year sometime. I don't know if it will be worth me going on it by then because I wont exactly be newly diagnosed by then.

There were other venues holding this course but I have no way of getting to them. Pity there wasn't an online DESMOND i could use.

Hi Jim - unbelievable that it is today! It's a shame that you are going to have to wait so long, but it will still be worth going along. There is a lot to learn in this game, and although you will learn a lot, we all learn something new practically every day! 🙂 One of the big benefits of attending a course like DESMOND is not so much what they teach, although this can be a good test of your knowledge, but in getting together with other people who are in the same boat - it can help a great deal to bounce experiences and ideas off one another in 'real life' and learn how others have managed up to that point. 🙂

Thanks for the reply, I do see your point and I will of course attend, just a little disappointed that I could have been on it today had the letter arrived a day or so ago. I have my podiatrist appointment in a fortnight, so best foot forward 😛.

Hi jim I had to wait some time before I was able to go, but believe me it is worth going, they explain the whole diabetes thing in good detail and in a understanding way, also if you have a partner they can go with you like my misses did, she found it very educational and gave her understanding from what it is like from are point of view.
Good luck! 🙂

It took my doctor 6years to send me on a DESMOND course. It didn't teach me much if anything but was useful to find out how others deal with things. When you get offered again do go if only to meet others in the same position as you.

6 years? 😱
Caroline is right about meeting other people, always helps to talk to someone else who is in the same boat.
