depression

Hi Cris, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear about the depression, unfortunately it can often accompany diabetes, partly due to the fact we can't escape from it, but also because sometimes poor control can affect our moods and energy levels. Have you been diagnosed long? What is your control like, and what insulin regime are you on? Are you depressed about the diabetes, or your particular circumstances?

Sorry for all the questions!

hi,im carb hi im carb counting n taking novo rapid n lantus,iv been off work a few times now with flu,and iv been given a stage 1,im scared il lose my job,i have never had a sickness record, but i work for the coucil and with all ther cut backs im sure they will let me go,im off tday because iv been throwing up all night, does anybody know what help i could get if i got finished throngh ill health?

I work for a council and they should support you through ill health, especially if you can connect it to your diabetes, which having the flu will be, as it often makes you unable to eat anything and so are at risk of ketones........

Are you equipped to deal with 'sick days' where you can't stomach anything?

If not, this may be why you have needed the time of work.....

I assume your employer is aware of your diabetes through attending hospital appointments....?

Being a council I wouldn't imagine they would just let you go without some sort of discussion

i was type 2 4 2 years but then changed to type 1 3 yea urs ago,i have other auto ime disorders under active thyroid n vitiligo,
my sugars are all over at the moment iv no appetite

type 2 then type 1, that's seems strange to me.......was it a slower on set type 1 maybe.....?

Its likely that a 'less than perfect' control of your diabetes is contributing to your depression and other conditions, so it would be a good idea to discuss your control with your team and us of course......😉

How are you managing the blood sugars and injections etc....?

consultant says its rare,i got acidosis n sta yed in hospital
17 day till my sugars were stable

So what bits of your control are you struggling with?

Do you carb count? Test your blood? Correct high blood sugar?

Hi Cris, have you seen the Carbs & Cals book? Really helpful for when you are eating out for estimating carbs 🙂

I think with carb counting, the more you do it, the less of a pain it becomes, you just become able to guess what you have on your plate....

eating out is always tricky, but for most its not an every night thing, so it can be categorized as a treat.....

As Alan said, carbs and cals is great, I have the pocket version. And even though I class myself as a competent and time served carb counter, it still comes in very handy on a regular basis.....

I have to say I dont weigh much apart from oven chips or pasta, but I thinks that because I am either having half or all of the packet, which has all the information there for you....

What kind of foods do you eat?

hi Cris45
When I was first advised to count carbs, many of the food items were noted in sizes rather than weights, so
1 hens egg sized potato = 10g CHO
1 medium slice bread = 10g,
1 tablespoon cooked rice (or baked beans or peas, I seem to recall) = 10g
1 medium apple, orange, peach, pear = 10g
1 rounded tablespoon flour = 10g
etc etc

I still do not weigh most things - just use my eyes.

I'm probably not the best controlled person, but I do not care to spend my life worrying about the weight of the food I eat!

No Barbie, it's a rounded DESSERT spoon of flour (14g weight) (half an ounce in old money) is 10g carb.

A rounded tablespoon of flour is double that !!!!!

A large, medium sliced loaf - you know, standard Warburton's or supermarket own brand wrapped bread - each slice approx 15g CHO. Medium referred purely to the thickness of the bread and it was a SMALL TIN LOAF that they used for this.

You wanna just try weighing your apple. About double the carb value that you think there ......

But I agree on the hen's egg size potato! Weight approx 60g. (raw, peeled, dunno boiled)

Hi Cris45 - welcome. There has been great advice on there for you already - I can only add that the depression can lift once you have some control. Getting those scores down seems to work wonders for me, and I hope will work for you too. haz
