I went to the dentist today as I had some discomfort for the last few days!

While I was there I asked about my inflammed gums I sometimes get now. She told me due to being on insulin it causes this and is sometimes mistaken for gum disease!? I was wondering if anyone else has ever had this? She assured me I don't have gum disease as I got quite worried!

Oh and my discomfort is a wisdom tooth coming through!! :(
 
No, I've never heard of insulin as being a cause for inflamed gums :confused: Some people with diabetes do have problems with their teeth and gums if their BG levels are not good though, as high levels encourage bacteria and infections.
 
That's really interesting - my teeth are not in the best state (lots of fillings, thank-you hypos! 🙄) but more recently I've had problems with the teeth in both top & bottom jaws on one side of my mouth...it's the gums really more than the teeth but the only way I can describe it is like I can't bite / chew anything too tough / crunchy, & it kind of feels not quite like mouth ulcers (gret at descriptions, aren't I?!). Gargling with tcp helps, so I wonder if it's inflammed gums rather than the teeth? :confused: Not something I've had previously in over 30 years on insulin though. I've an appointment in a few weeks so I'll ask then...
 
Mmm strange! She told me to gargle salt water! Maybe try that? Man, being diabetic sucks!!! I was thinkin of gettin Invisalign but I'm not sure if ill be able to if I get inflammed gums?
 
Have you tried changing your toothpaste? I had a nagging toothache sort of pain on one side of my mouth for months and after x-rays found out it was caused by gum inflammation. I had been using Sensodyne for years, but my dentist recommended changing to Colgate Total. I was deeply suspicious of her motive, but for the sake of a few quid gave her the benefit of the doubt and gave it a try. Within a month, the pain was gone!
