I went for my dental check-up this morning and discovered I have 2 holes in 1 of my teeth. I had a feeling that was so, due to pain on eating sweet things recently, and know it is down to the multiple hypos and subsequent treatment with luzocade and sweets over the past few months :(. My dentist was a bit off at first saying ?make sure you avoid sweet things in future? to which I replied ?impossible really as I have to treat hypos with sugar!?. I then explained my current situation and after that he was very nice, saying that explains the holes (I haven?t had a filling for many years) and has prescribed me some high fluoride toothpaste to help until I get the hypos under control. It is still disappointing and I?m not looking forward to going back for the fillings! 😱

Sorry to hear about the fillings :( I had the most trouble with my teeth in the 18 months running up to my diagnosis - I suspect my levels had been high for some time and this was encouraging infections (I had to have my first ever adult tooth removed after a 12 year old infection re-awoke!). I was probably eating more sweet things too because my brain was probably encouraging it. Since diagnosis though, I probably eat less sweet things than before because I don't want to 'bolus for a biscuit', and my teeth have (touch wood!) been fine since diagnosis.

I do understand how you feel though about having to have sweet things to deal with hypos, and the worst ones are at night because the enamel can be weakened if you brush your teeth soon after so you can't win :(

I hope that the fillings are quick and simple, and that you have far less need fr hypo treatments in the future 🙂

I have had quite a few night hypos, I do rinse my mouth out with water after lucozade in the night but isn't much more I can do. I have never had a sweet tooth so don't eat many sweets things at all, apart from treating the hypos.

It just makes you realise that it can affect every little part of you, one way or another. :(

Just want to add my sympathy - I am not fond of the dentist (that's putting it mildly) so you have my understanding.xx

Thank you, Flutterby. I'm not too bad if it's just a check-up but anything longer is not so good. They can't fit my appointment in until end of July so will have my eldest daughter watching with delight too as she loves anything 'medical' and it'll be school holidays. 😱 🙂

Urgh I feel your pain. I had a filling last week. Or maybe it was the week before.

Anyway it was my first checkup since being diagnosed, and the dentist was very good at explaining how diabetes can impact dental health too, all about looking after my gums etc and extra x-rays for me.

She's married to the "diabetes GP" at my GP surgery! :D So maybe I struck lucky having her as my dentist too...

Hope your fillings go ok x

Horrible things, fillings! It definitely helps if they know something about diabetes, good that your dentist is clued up. 🙂

lots of sympathy about the dentist. I hope the fillings are pain free

Thank you! Hopefully I won't need any again for a few years after these.
