A dentist cheated the NHS out of nearly ?80,000 by billing for 1,700 elderly patients he did not treat including some who were dead.

Edmund Jaques, 64, of Kentford near Newmarket, Suffolk, was jailed for 18 months after he admitted carrying out the fraud between June 2009 and March 2011.

Ipswich Crown Court heard how Jaques ran a business, providing dental care for residents of care homes who were unable to visit a surgery.
He took away lists of residents at homes he visited in Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire so he could draw up extra invoices to get payment from the NHS.

Prosecutor Andrew Shaw said: "He would take these lists of residents away and fill out claim forms for treating patients without having treated them at all.

"On a number of occasions not only did he not provide treatment but because the population of care homes changed quite regularly, a number of people for whom he was claiming to have provided treatment had died."
