Hi, I have been diagnosed now for just over 2 years and it's only now hitting me that I have Diabetes... some health problems have made it "real" to me. I was just wandering if anybody else suffered from any form of denial of their diabetes or did you ease straight into it?

Hi Sam, I think that it is very common to be in denial about diabetes. It's one of those conditions where you may be able to function reasonably well for some time, so often it's hard to believe that it's 'real' until something comes along that makes it plain it isn't going to go away :( What is also difficult to come to terms with is that because there is no cure as yet, you'll always have to deal with it - that can overwhelm some people and make them shy away from acknowledging it.

The problem is you can't hide from it forever so the best approach is to take it by the scruff of the neck and learn how to control it so it has a minimal impact on your life and the things you love to do. It doesn't have to dominate your life, but neither can it be ignored - you have to give it some respect and spend some time each day making sure that you do what you need to in order to stay healthy - but that doesn't have to be anything other than a little planning and forethought once you have established your own particular 'ground rules' - treats in moderation, regular exercise, take your medications, and follow a healthy, low GI diet.

I know that makes it sound easy, and I know that it isn't, but you need to get into the habit of thinking positively about life with diabetes so that it becomes less of a burden.

I went through it, it was the first emotion, then there was anger, sadness.......this all happened within one week, until I was released from hospital..............everyone's different though............

think of it as just the next step in a handful of emotions............
