Rising numbers of dementia patients are putting pressure on NHS nurses, with one in four hospital beds now occupied by people suffering from the condition, the Prime Minister has said.

David Cameron said there needs to be a greater emphasis on compassion in the health service, as ministers announce plans to ban untrained health "assistants" from working in hospitals under plans to raise standards.
More than 50,000 low-paid and unregulated assistants will have to receive formal care training.

Mr Cameron said: "We shouldn't underestimate the pressures nurses are under. One in four beds are taken up with people with dementia. I never underestimated for a second the pressures they are under but we do need a greater emphasis on compassion and standards of care in our hospitals."
