I tell you what I wonder a bit about 'these days' Emma - what happens do you suppose, to anyone using a pump - or even good MDI, should they need to go into care?

OK if you are not mentally capable of doing stuff for yourself BUT if it was physical disability and you are mentally alert - I know I'd want to scream if the right things weren't done at the right times for me - and there is such a lack of properly fully medically trained carers everywhere .......

Normally what would happen is a care plan would be made between yourself, your diabetes team and whoever is in charge of your care (i.e family, residential care etc). A residential care home has a duty of care would need to follow whatever care plan has been agreed on.

If for example someone was not mentally able to care for themselves then the care plan would need to be adapted to make sure that there was someone who could follow the plan - or in severe cases where there is no one - an independent mental capacity advocate (IMCA) could be brought in to make sure you are receiving the correct care.

This will sound ridiculous but I do sometimes worry about stuff like this for my son when he's an old man. Both my Granddads had dementia. Obviously I won't be around to help!!! Let's hope a cure for type 1 arrives before then...
