Delaying the winter lockdown caused up to 27,000 extra deaths in England, the Resolution Foundation thinktank has claimed as it accused the government of a “huge mistake” which should be central to any public inquiry into the UK’s handling of the pandemic.

In an assessment of policy over the last year, it said delaying the start of the latest lockdown until January, despite evidence of fast-rising cases before Christmas, led to around a fifth of all fatalities caused by the virus. It said these could have been avoided if restrictions were put in place quickly enough to prevent the death rate rising from early December.

While it praised the vaccination programme – delivering jabs three times faster than Europe – and financial support for firms and workers which has included £6,700 for every household on average, it said mistakes on lockdowns were repeated “three tragic times”. It added that allowing extra deaths did not limit economic impacts, but rather increased them, because it only precipitated longer and more onerous lockdowns.

Well it's like this - personally I was not present in any of the cabinet or other meetings when SAGE or others were giving their advice to the Government, hence can make no useful comment about exactly what info anyone officially knew, or when they actually knew it.

Actually, I think they mean, people who died within 28 days of a postive test. Of those 27,000 "extra" deaths, how many of those were actually admitted to hospital because they were seriously ill with covid and died as a result of covid and how many went into hospital for completely different reasons and died for reasons other than being gravely ill with covid?

It's like testing cars to see if they have brakes, when they actually need to be testing to see if their brakes are working.

27,000 people dying in car crashes after they were tested for brakes, is not the same as 27,000 people dying in car crashes after their cars tested positive for brake failure.

Many of those 27,000 people never went near a hospital.

Your analogy is ludicrous. I honestly can’t be bothered explain why, because I don’t think you would be competent to understand.
