Had my lung function test and saw the doctor at the chest clinic today, I have some fibrosis of my lungs and obvious restrictions with my breathing :( the docs still not sure what it is so I'm seeing a specialist in about 3 weeks. Doc didn't seem too positive about it though! In the meantime I've been put on steroids. I've been told to see my diabetes consultant because steroids have an effect on blood sugar ? do steroids have a really big effect on bm readings or do I just have to be a little more vigilant? I'm worried about these steroids having an effect on my weight. I've put on nearly 6 stone in a year and I'm basically housebound at the moment and with this breathing difficulties I'm finding it really hard to do any exercise. Anyone had an experience with steroids (I'm taking prednisolone) that can shed a little light on this? It's been such a rough 12months and I'm not sure I can take much more of this, I've tried so hard to get my diabetes under control, this just feels like another set back :(

Hi Sianee. Just wanted to send you some (((hugs))). You really are having a tough time.😱 I'm sure some of the forum's steroid-users will be along soon to reassure you. 😱

Hi Sianee

I've never had them, but I gather steroids increase BG in many people. I'm not sure if it's a general increase or whether it's related to the time of taking tablets. Hopefully someone with more experience will know. In the meantime I hope the steroids do your lungs some good and dont cause too much BG chaos.

Hi Sianee. I'm really sorry you are having such a tough time and hope the next dr you see is more positive. With regard to Prednisolone, I have only taken short courses of them but they had a major effect on my blood sugar so you will need advice and to be really careful with monitoring whilst on them. Hopefully it'll be a short term thing with the steroids that will get you back on the road to being well again. Thinking of you.

Steroids increase insulin resistance, so yes, it can increase BG's.
