Can someone explain please.
Just started so levels are still high

My level first thing in the morning before anything was 12 which it was on my fasting blood test diagnosis a month ago. I had breakfast 25 carbs and after an hour its 17.9 then 4 hours after breakfast I had lunch a prawn salad 20 carbs and it was 16.5.

Now looking at these figures how on earth can you get down to levels you are talking about 5 6 and 7. Does it happen over a few weeks is it accumulative with eating lower carbs, 90-100g is my daily target, do you just keep eating less and less carbs to get it down? I have got the exercise cycle out and am doing 10 mins a day and building up each day to more. I have about a stone to lose to get to proper weight (but lets be honest thats not a lot) So is it accumulative or is it just less and less carbs (you do need some Surely for safe nutrition). I am on no meds as I cant take the metformin prescribed to me I am seeing the nurse Thursday but if from other threads max dose only knocks a couple of points off i am still looking at a base line of 10. Can anyone explain the mechanism of how it works.

Hi Sharon, yes - it is a cumulative thing. As you build up your exercise and lose weight from your dietary adjustments your body will become more sensitive to the insulin you are producing and your levels, including your waking ones, should start to reduce. It does take time and I can understand your anxiety and demoralisation at still seeing high numbers although you are trying your best. Be patient and stick with what you are doing.

The thing to observe is not so much the total value of the readings you are taking after eating, but the amount by which your levels rise after eating. As your overall sensitivity improves and your levels fall generally, those total numbers should also decline.
 
Yes it takes time!

Your diet, how much exercise you get and your medication will all help get your levels down - but it takes time. It took at least 6 months for mine to come down (roughly mirroring the weight coming off me).

You can drop to very low Carb intake, ~40g/daily. Some of the ultra low carbers do this and they aint dead yet. What long term affects it has I don't know. I dropped down to about 70g/day when I was trying to loose weight.

You might find that going for low GI for those carbs you do have since they will tend to not push you so high. Watch those breakfast carbs too since that is when your insulin resistance is the highest. I've dropped back to 10-15g in the morning - you still want to eat something in the morning else you liver might just keep on pumping glucose out till you do.

I had 2.5 stone to drop off to get to BMI:23, so no, a stone isn't all that much.

Happier tonight I have done a whole day of testing and it seems as you say after breakfast is the worst reading the best was two hours after dinner tonight.11.5 I now realise there is a lot of work in front of me.
