Had my first 'blow out' tonight since diagnosis and consequent healthy eating started about 6 weeks ago...

Fillet steak (cooked, according to the family 'better than any restaurant'!!), potato dauphinoise (made in a small ramekin so the equivalent of 3 medium sized King Edwards between 4 people), mushrooms and peas. Oh yes, garlic ahoy and double cream!

So, fat wise, that's not a good dinner! But I just wondered if anyone could do a GL translation? I love love love King Edwards, so if dauphinoise is a viable option (made with garlic and double cream) then I'll have it more often! It's the least amount of spud I could possibly eat yet was a nice sized portion considering it wasn't even 1 whole potato. And have I read somewhere that the fat (cream) is a good idea to have with high GI spud? I possibly just invented that to suit myself though 🙂

Anyway it was delicious, the vampires won't come near and I felt pretty normal for half an hour again! Lets see what it does to my body though...!

Sounds wonderful! And yes, the cream would slow the digestion and therefore lower the GI of the potatoes. The only true way of knowing how such a meal affects you personally would be to test before and at 1 and 2 hours afterwards so you could see what kind of rise it gave you. If someone made that meal for me I certainly wouldn't turn it away! 🙂

Oh that's good, I thought I'd just made the fat/GL thing up! Nice to know some facts are sinking in somewhere in the old grey matter 🙂

Oh my it was luscious 🙂 I'm quite a decent cook, but I'm also a bit of a fussy b*gger - not in terms of variety but I would literally rather not eat than eat something I don't 'fancy'. And I fancied steak and spud!

I'm still an utter useless wuss with the testing, but am very body conscious of the symptoms when I get high so am watching myself closely! I went to a party last saturday night with the usual buffet fayre, ate a plateful and a glass of wine then spent the evening sitting outside with a bottle of SF ribena....felt rubbish! So far I feel OK tonight but the scales will hate me this week 🙂

It strikes me that you are doing very well for someone only a few weeks after diagnosis 🙂 You are learning fast and making the correct analysis, but you are also finding a good balance between the diabetes and living a little, so well done and keep it up! 🙂
