Hi - I'm Twinkle's friend and since joining her exclusive "betes" club she encouraged me to sign up here too.
We both had a feeling I had diabetes but she was braver than me and went to the Dr sooner. It finally took me going out shopping for the day and not enjoying it to make me make that appointment! A day's shopping is normally fun for me and I can be out for a good 11 hours and have enough energy to last the day - mainly window shopping of course (especially if my husband asks)!! Last week's shopping trip was fraught with low energy, toilet breaks and the cold sweat/shakey moments - I knew I couldn't carry on that way and had to bite the bullet.
Anyway, on 4th August my friend "Twinkle" came to pick me up and whisked me off to make sure I made it to the GP appointment and sure enough - BG 12.1! So have been for my blood tests - started on Metformin on Wednesday this week (1 a day for this week and then 2 a day) and although I need statins for chol the GP decided not to throw everything at me at once, so has delayed that for 6 months.
Today was my first day back at work (I took a week to sort my head out - it really is all so very over-whelming) and the occupational health team have put me on half days for a couple of weeks and boy, was I tired when I got home at lunchtime today!
So, just wanted to say hi and I will be joining the weight loss crew as I have a significant amount of weight to lose - it will be a long slog, but at least I have good company!:D

Hello Shopaholic and welcome on board! Although I did wave a *hello* to you on Twinkles thread yesterday. I'm glad you got yourself diagnosed so you can now get on with dealing with the dreaded D. It sounds like you are positive and determined. Also you have a very good friend in Twinkle, friends like that are worth their weight in gold!

Ask anything you need to know and I look forward to getting to know you better. XXXXX

Hi and welcome to the forum! Sorry to hear you've had to join us but I hope you find lots of support and friendship here.

Hi there Shopoholic love the name reckon I should have that name too hehe.Lovely to see you signing up on the boards, your amongst people who really "get" it.So feel free to ask anything anytime we are all one big happy family x

Hi Shopaholic, welcome to the forum 🙂 I am sure that Twinkle has already started to convince you that diabetes is something that can be managed well, and has offered tips on how to approach things. If you have any questions or concerns, then please do share them and we will endeavour to allay your fears and improve your knowledge! 🙂

I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

Yay! You're here 🙂

Instantly knew it was you from your username...as I've explained in a previous thread our early exercise regime will consist of (mainly window) shopping trips!

Think how much more we'll be able to purchase by shopping in the New Look sale rather than Evans :D

Hope the metformin side effects aren't too harsh - for the benefit of everyone else our families went on holiday together 2 weeks after my diagnosis and the Metfartin had kicked in...!

Glad the team have put you on half days for a while, I found afternoons a giant nap-fest for the first couple of weeks and was very glad of having the half days. One day you'll simply wake up and suddenly realise you have more energy xx

Nothing wrong with shopping in Evans, without it i would be walking around naked 😎

Lol, same here! Just that it's not always as cheap as some of the other shops, we could potentially buy twice as much!

Evans online at sale time is good though 🙂

Welcome to the forum Shopaholic 🙂

Hi Shopaholic. Welcome 🙂

You'll both need to venture further and further along the high streets of Hampshire as you get fitter ! :D

Thanks for the warm welcome!
I've ordered some books from Amazon - mainly cookbooks and a carbs book. My Dr is keen for me to be very low carbs and so that's what I've started. 7lbs down as of this morning!
The Dr also told me that type 2 diabetes could be beaten and become a "past condition". I'm not sure that all the reading I've done so far supports that view. Even when fully under contol for a matter of years, there's no way of going back to the old style of living is there and having an unlimited amount of carb once again? I can understand that the medication could be reduced or stopped if conditions were right but as far as I can make out, that's as far as it goes. Or am I wrong? The Dr said she was prepared to sign it off as a past condition in terms of insurance, etc. Has anyone been told the same thing?
I see the Diabetic nurse on Wednesday.
I am lucky to have a friend like Twinkle - I told her yesterday that she is both my guru and guinea pig as she's experiencing everything first! Hehe! x

PS the username also reflects a favourite series of books (next to Harry Potter of course!)

Yes, you'll find a lot of stuff knocking around that claims that diabetes can be 'cured', but to my knowledge you are correct in what you say - it is a condition that can be managed, but letting things slip would cause your blood sugar levels to rise beyond 'normal' range. Diabetes can have a very wide range of how it affects different people. Some people find that losing weight and adopting a healthier diet and lifestyle is sufficient, but for some the support from medication is required no matter how hard they try, so it should never be seen as a failure if this happens. 🙂
