Hi I'm new to the forum daughter was diagnosed January this year and it's been a struggle! We have a few weeks left till she starts the Omnipod pump and I'm really hoping this will help her blood sugars a lot.

This past few weeks we have really struggled to get her BG bellow 10 even at night when she's asleep she is going up to 18/19! Ketones are fine, we have increased insulin and made adjustments and doing corrections so hopefully these will help soon.

Hi and welcome. How old is she? And what insulins is she currently on?

The early months can be really difficult with the honeymoon phase making glucose levels less predictable. If she’s going high at night then it’s likely that her basal isn’t right but it can depend when her last food is too. Any pump can only be as good as the ratios that you’re working off so don’t delay getting her insulin adjusted just because the pump is imminent.

The good news though is that even running high you may find that her HBA1C isn’t bad.

My kid was 8 at diagnosis and has just turned 14. I promise it does get easier.

Welcome @Robertson88 🙂 The first few months of Type 1 are hard. They’re hard anyway because there’s so much to get used to, but they’re also hard because it’s the honeymoon period and out bodies can randomly contribute some of their own insulin just to confuse things.

Hopefully your daughter has a Libre or Dexcom? Do you have this helpful book?:

Welcome to the forum @Robertson88

We have several members on Omnipod who get on really well with them. You’ll find lots of posts and support in the Pump and Tech section of the forum.

Hope her pump start goes well - any change of diabetes management can feel a bit like starting over, but do give it time. Hopefully the precision of the doses, bolus calculation, flexible basal profile, and options like temporary rates and extended bolus delivery options will give you lots of extra tweakability.

Is she getting sensors that work with the omnipod?

Beauty of pump is you can have multiple basal rates throughout a 24 hour period, so her night readings should be far more stable throughout the night.

If possible ask her team if she can go straight onto Omnipod 5, it integrates with Dexcom G6 sensor so it predicts & adjust basal insulin going from Dexcom sensor readings, it's great piece of kit & takes away some of the stresses of manual adjustments.

Thanks you so much! Omnipod and dexcom have gone amazing for her she is slowly getting back to her self! Growing in confidence doing it on her own and is really happy with it all.
Her levels are the best they have been since she was diagnosed

Thanks for the update @Robertson88

So glad to hear the tech is working well for her, and she is getting back to being herself again. 🙂
