Hi all

My 9 year old was diagnosed a month ago and she feels sick a lot of the time - not just with hypos. This has been going on a while. We check her when she feels sick (5-6 times a day) and over the weekend her BG was in a good place (6, 7 or 8 etc) but she was still feeling sick to often. It comes and goes but we can't work out why. She doesn't seem to have a bug or anything.

Is this normal?

Thanks.

Welcome.
I can't help with nausea , but most find if not well even before any symptoms the blood glucose can creep up or be high, so a bug is less likely to be the reason.
Have you contacted your Diabetic Nurse and discussed it with them?

Hello Rustfitzy. Has your daughter only started feeling sick since diagnosis? I would mention it to her doctor anyway. My daughter who is much older has feelings of sickness caused by anxiety but there could be a more physical reason for your daughters. Hope it's soon sorted because it's a horrible feeling.

The nurse seems to think this is normal and is a bit dismissive of it. I just feel that with everything else going on it's just not fair that she has to feel sick so much of the day as well.

Yes only feeling sick since diagnosis (as far as she can remember).

Something else to run past your GP, my daughter used to suffer from abdominal migraines ( migraine without the headache, basically feeling sick) and I kept a diary, and tracked it down to whenever she was having a growth spurt. Just a long shot, but if your daughter is now able to process all her food properly and convert it to energy, (which she probably wasn't for a while pre diagnosis) is she now having a growth spurt?

Sorry. It maybe worth keeping a food diary and seeing if it is in relation to any particular food or food groups.

Thanks so much for this! It does make sense that it's a possibility. She's also getting a lot of headaches. We noticed her younger brother's catching her up so maybe it's a growth spurt. Thanks x

When does your daughter feel sick, is it after meals or any time of the day?

Any time of day really. Mainly in the afternoons.
Ah ok was wondering if your daughter might be coeliac. Is the sickness weekends as well as school days?

Yes it seems to be pretty much every day. She's also dog tired as we're testing through the night so hoping its something to do with that. She was tested for coeliac at diagnosis a month ago.

Perhaps then best bet is to have a chat with her GP and see what he can come up with. Hopefully something nice and simple to fix so your little lady starts to feel well again very soon.
