A diabetes sufferer has criticised NHS West Kent for not offering a course that could help him to manage his condition. Alan Eadie, 75, of Longfield, Dartford, was keen to enrol on a Type 2 diabetes education programme.

While attending a basic one-day course in 2008 when he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, he had heard about a six-week course run by charity X-PERT which could help him in the longer-term and prevent complications.

When Mr Eadie asked Darent Valley Hospital if he could sign up for the course, which is offered free to NHS patients, he was told that the West Kent Primary Care Trust only offered the one-day course after initial diagnosis.

?NICE guidelines say structured education is an integral part of diabetes care that should be discussed with the GP at the annual review, so I was extremely disappointed my local primary care trust couldn?t offer it to me,? he said.
