Was invited to do daisy course same as dafne. But called daisy here , got letter through post other day to do it and to ring well I ring all the place are gone , sed put me Down for next year April 2014 which kinda annoyed me wanting to take control of my diabetes by doing this course and now can't start carb count , which make me feel more set backs arggggg

That seems such a shame that all the places were taken so quickly :( Can you ask that you be placed on a list for any cancellations - people often drop out of these things before they start and it sounds to me like you would benefit greatly from a course. Alternatively, you could ask your clinic of a DSN/dietician might be available for a one-to-one discussion sooner - wouldn't be as comprehensive, but should help. There's also the free online BERTIE course at http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/ 🙂

it took six years for my doctor to send me on a DESMOND, and this was AFTER he had trashed another course I wanted to do but did anyway.

I did start carb counting before DAFNE, Eat things you know the carbs, bread ect, take your b/s before you eat, and 4 hours after eating, if its around the same.
Most people start at 10g carbs to 1 unit insulin

I didn't really think about ratios before my course, but had started adjusting based on my readings for different meals e.g. too low after, less insulin; too high after, more insulin. Best to get some initial guidance from your DSN first though as they will know more about your own particular circumstances. I agree it's not something you necessarily need to wait for a course to teach you - my course only spent about an hour on it anyway (not DAFNE).

Just really annoyed me that all places are gone on the months that it runs and also there a least 10 people on list for each one for cancellation so point , I was hoping to do course to try gain control and show Im trying , and then get out forward for pump , I've tried my own carb counting got so frustrated and peed off ass couldn't get hang off and sugars and up down and back ground , I know it seem easy enough but I live on my own so don't have much support 🙂 , sorry for my rant lol

Which is exactly why we've suggested before that you do the on-line course Oliver.

OK you don't get the anatomy lessons and you don't get one-to-one - but you DO learn how to carb count.

This isn't some cheap and nasty half-hearted course you know! There are only 2 courses in the UK which match every single one of the NICE Guidelines for such courses - those are DAFNE and BERTIE.

THe people who invented BERTIE also train other HCPs to do the BERTIE training in their own hospitals, but they are not allowed to call it BERTIE. My course was one of theses - CARBS 4-1 - 'Coventry and Rugby....' whatever the rest of it is.

And I don't understand why others insist on doing it all in a week flat out. Ours was delivered one day a week over 4 weeks. You then go away and practice in real life, then come back each week with another 3 days' food, BG and insulin diaries which are openly discussed and analysed. (Nicely I mean - we all learned as much from others' mistakes - or what they did right - as we did from our own results)

Because it's only one day a week and key personnel don't therefore have to go AWOL for a whole week at a time, this enables my lot to deliver more courses than would otherwise be possible. AS long as two out of 3 trained personnel are available each day, they can do it. Though it is better if all 3 are there - because you can all ask more questions and get more answers.

Hi, as a parent we have been offered nothing in the way of any DAFNE/DAISY or what not, yet expected to adjust insulin, work out ratios, corrections, and carb count for our dtr.
I did the free on line one which was pretty helpful. It would be a good starting point for you.
Don't let the way off date of the course put you off starting on your own and taking a hold of things yourself, I think that would be a shame.
