I need a bit of advice. My dsn contacted me today to tell me I could have a space on a Dafne course 10-14th September. I am desperate to do Dafne as I need to do it before I can ask my name to go on the pump waiting lists and because I believe it really helps people with issues they are having and how to work out ratios better etc.

Anyway I work in a very small place and someone is on holiday that week already. How do I stand with asking for time off for what I feel is something essential for my medical condition-do I have the right to the time off for this even though it's a week long course? Will be gutted if I can't take this opportunity (it's a cancellation they've had!) so any advice appreciated.

I'd just be up front and ask for it, explaining that you know it's not great timing but it would make a massive difference to your health and quality of life.

Opionions differ as to whether you are entitled to the time off, I got it but some people on here had to use annual leave, which is why I'd just explain all about it and ask nicely!

I'd explain the situation and ask the boss - but as, you say, in a small workplace, it may be that only one person can be on planned leave at once.

Definitely add about the lowered chances of you taking time off sick if you do it - knowing that they can gain from you doing it as well will be a good point to make.

Hope you enjoy the course if and when you do go on it. Best wishes!

I did the Juggle course, and the organiser sent an emailed letter to my MD.
He was fine with it - despite us being busy.

It might be worth asking someone to do similar - unless you feel you can ask yourself. Maybe taking some literature might help.
