Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi all,
Newbie here. I had the hba1c done as a preventative check early last year, and it came back high (though they didn't tell me how high). I was sent away to "sort my diet", and to try to lose weight. I managed the diet change by removing the large amount of crisps, chips and rice that I was eating, and after 3 months was declared OK. I found it very difficult to lose weight though, and am still around 120Kg.
At the end of the year, I got cold feet. I have never had cold feet in my life. I went to the Dr. and they squeezed my toes, and checked for numbness in my feet and legs - all OK. When I re-started work in January, my feet felt like blocks of ice under the desk. I panicked ! I went back to the Dr. and told him it felt like somebody throwing cold water on my feet, like in waves. He re-did the numbness check, and has put me on Duloxetine 20mg, which I believe is for neurothapy. The only change is that my feet either feel cold, or hot and itchy, as if the skin is too tight.
He added that the annual hba1c would be done at the regular time, in a month or so, and didn't seem concerned about things.

Can anybody tell me if I should be panicking here ? I have not slept properly for over a week now, as I'm worried I may be about to lose both of my feet.

The side effects of Duloxetine (2 x 20mg/day) appear to be that I feel nauseous in the morning, and that I am eating probably half of what I was before, as I feel I can't eat any more. That, combined with my new exercise regime, should get rid of the extra weight !

I feel I am in limbo here. The Dr. has not stated that I have T2, and probably will not until the hba1c has been done again. I have not been given any T2 medicine or advice on diet, but have been given the neurothapy tablets. I have dropped off the carbs again, where I can see them.

Any advice ?

My advice is to get yourself a meter and start testing your blood glucose yourself to see what effect the foods you choose are having on your readings - if your results are between 4 to 7ish all day and all night - you haven't got diabetes.

Th SD Codefree one is about the cheapest to get and the test strips ditto. It's only available online, not from a pharmacy.

You can get neuropathy without having diabetes - but I'm as suspicious as you.
