Physiotherapy could prevent 200,000 falls each year in England, save lives and £275million for the NHS, a web tool developed for the CSP has shown.

The tool, known as the cost of falls calculator, shows that of the 200,000 falls prevented by physiotherapy, 25,000 would have led to a fracture, care home admission or death.

For every £1 spent on physiotherapy, the NHS would get back £1.50 through savings across falls pathways, according to the calculations.

The CSP wants the tool to be used by NHS commissioners to identify how they can best protect people living in their area.

Karen Middleton, chief executive of the CSP, said: ‘This new web tool can transform the availability of care in England and it is vital that NHS commissioners make full use of it.’
