Hi, Morning All
Brain picking time. lol
Prescribed the capsules the other day, as I may not be getting all my food nutrients.carbs.
Since Tues my blood levels have increased by 4 - 5 mmols and i am forever topping up with actrapid to curb the trend.
Could these capsules have anything to do with the rise ?????
I have been type 1 for 35 yrs and latest HBALC was 55 in Feb, so all was good. Im not unwell or showing no signs YET lol
Anybody else with this problem,
many thanks in advance
paul

On same dose of Creon since 2018 to treat EPI, didn't see rise no rise in bg, if anything bg has been much better since starting tabs.

I have been taking Creon since 2007. Started on 10k per meal, had pancreas removed, was then on 40k per meal ( they don’t make them in that size anymore unfortunately). Became diabetic 2010. No one mentioned that Creon would or could raise my BGs, its only through trial and error that I have found this out myself. I now take 125k per meal, 150k on occasions, and my BGs have definitely risen this last year or so despite not changing my diet. I have upped my insulin ratios to hopefully offset this. Due my Hba1c in April, last year was 51, I do feel this year may be higher. I will mention it to the DSN but I doubt she will have a clue. I need the Creon so just have to do what I have to do.

If you take Creon your BG is almost bound to rise. Creon isn’t a drug, it’s replacement digestive enzymes. So since you are digesting your food better, more is absorbed. Common sense alone...your BG will rise.

As eggyg says, you just have to go with the tide. I found that since I developed chronic pancreatitis and went on Creon, it can be a tricky balancing act, which you have no choice but to get used to.

Because Creon isn’t a drug, you should vary the dose to cope with the level of fat in a meal. A very low fat meal, I often don’t bother. If I slather butter on veg, I do. You’ll learn the rules soon enough. The important thing is to ignore the instruction on the pack, which will say “2 three times a day”. Rubbish. You don’t need to take it if you don’t eat.

One more thing to mention. Due to not absorbing food properly consultant insisted on Dexa Scan checking bone density, results were in stage before osteoporosis called osteopenia. So started on Evacal D3 twice daily, have to take it for at least 5 years before another scan is done.

Paul, worth asking dr if issue has been going on for while.

In the 12 and a half years I have been taking it, not one doctor/ DSN/HCP has EVER asked about my taking of Creon, reviewed my dosage etc etc. I think they are scared! I didn’t realise that about bone density, could it explain my various hip, shoulder, back problems? I’ll be bringing it up in my review next month. I won’t hold my breath that they will know what I’m talking about. I think I need to stop being so compliant, ie just saying everything is fine, I’m doing ok blah, blah blah.

Get seen by gastroenterology clinic for EPI, due to not absorbing food properly for some time before diagnosis I'm guessing dexta scan was precautionary & routine in these cases, once results showed osteopenia treatment commenced to prevent further decline .

Forgot to mention also take once weekly dose of alendronic acid, have to take it on same day on empty stomach so drug is sufficiently absorbed, its usually given to patients with osteoporosis but consultant thought best I started on it to strengthen bones, no idea how long will be taking it, have to ask next appointment.
