for the first time since I was diagnosed I had cramp all night.... even after I took 2 crampex tablets!! 😱

when I got up this morning I tested my BG as usual and was 5.3..... now that is really low for me as a morning reading. never had a fasting level that low. so I wondered if the cramp was due to low BG in the night.

anyone else tested while they have cramp??

I haven't tested for cramp. I did read somewhere that when you have stomach, abdominal problems your blood sugars can be a bit lower - as you are not absorbing as much glucose in the gut as normal. Just speculating - had you eaten or drunk anything that may have caused the cramping ? Are you OK now?

I dont know about cramps v bs but I know how to get rid of cramps...a bottle of water before bed and generally up your water intake during the day, simple but very very effective...oh and this works if you get sciatia too, instant results first time with all that have tried it. ps doesnt cure irritable legs though unfortunatly.

I occasionally suffer very badly from night cramps but I have never found any relationship between them and BGs. I take a magnesium supp, which helps, and I use normal levels of NaCl salt. I found they were much worse and more frequent when I reduced my salt intake too far. I also take Quinine Bisulphate when they are severe.

I suffered severely from night cramps before diagnosis. Since diagnosis i've not had them once 😱 :D. I used to wake up 2 or 3 times a night with cramps in my calves, was horrible and very painful. Apart from stretching the particular muscle when the cramp occurs, I don't really know how to stop them.

I haven't seen a link between my cramps and bg levels when I've tested. I think my cramps are due to poor circulation rather than anything else, because they are no longer one off occurrences. I can pretty much guarantee a problem every night at the moment.

When I was taking the aspirin, the cramps cleared though (I've stopped temporarily because of my monday appointment). Hopefully, when I start the aspirin again, they will settle down.

I hope it was just a one off for you

Andy 🙂

I take Quinine at night for cramps, on prescription from the Dr.

thanks to everyone who replied... sorry for my late response but I've been away for the weekend... just back this morning.

the cramp was a one-off... thankfully 🙂

I thought that there might be a correlation between the night cramps and low BG levels. but possibly not.

like Alan if I lower my salt intake too much I get night cramps for a couple or 3 nights until I get my salt levels back up again. but I can't think of anything I did to bring on the cramp the other night

oh well..... will wait for the next night cramp and test BG levels again just to see if they are low again

thanks again everyone :D

Night cramps is one of the things I am going to discuss with the doc this evening. I don't know if I am doing something wrong but did not used to get these before the diagnosis of diabetes. At first I was terrified it was a blood clot/thrombosis thing but reading threads on here calmed me down. However, they are still happening so I want to know what to do or not do. The terror of thrombosis relates to my brother's death last summer so I am not telling myself off for being over dramatic!!!

There is a lot to diabetes, isn't there!!

I used to get them as well before Dx, but rarely since and only then when I'm due on. Dehydration seems to have been my main problem, not BGs, and as long as I make sure I get enough fluids I seem to be OK.

Marg, if you're worried about thrombosis there are things you can do to help yourself. Support stockings of course, but also there some some simple exercises you can do (even while sitting at the desk) that might help your circulation. I have a friend who has had a small DVT while on a flight back from Oz and whose brother has to take Warfarin for his condition. He's had a thrombosis and two pin strokes.

She says she sits straight in her chair, feet flat on the floor and lifts her heels several times, pressing down with the balls of her feet, then presses the heels down and lifts the toes. Next, with the heels raised, she rolls the balls of her feet from side to side a few times. Just getting up and walking around will help too.

Thanks Alison, will try those exercises!!
