I saw my GP last week and asked her to sort out my retinal screening as I hadn't heard from them since being discharged from eye hospital last year. I got a letter yesterday, emailed to arrange an appointment and it's booked for next week at my local surgery!

I also realised I was overdue for my foot check so called the podiatry service and have an appointment tomorrow morning, also quite locally! 🙂

Most impressed, especially when I hear of people having to wait ages, travel miles, or even pay for foot checks 🙂

Well done Southampton!

crickey you are lucky, when I asked for regular feet checks I was told I didn't need them...

That's really impressive!

good to hear your getting sorted...southerner🙄

I get automatic appointments for all things, except feet
Since getting treatment for an `undergrowing` toenail, sorted with packing every few weeks, they have kept me on a short leash as they reckon my feet are high risk. Probably `cos I attack them with a `chainsaw`.. feet not feet people
So I am seen every 8 weeks or sooner if problems arise. Just ring for appointment couple of weeks in advance.
Very good service Darlington mob.......oooop NORTH :D

I live in Southampton ! Where do you have your foot check done ? Is there any treatment involved ?

You need to register with the Podiatry Service. You can refer yourself as you have a long-term condition (diabetes!). Details here:

http://www.solent.nhs.uk/ServiceCatInfo.asp?id=216

They will check your feet for pulses and sensitivity, and check for any problems. They do offer other services if necessary e.g. nail operations for ingrowing toenails. 🙂

Glad to hear that you are getting such a good service🙂

Glad to hear that you are getting such a good service🙂

It's interesting, because I've been involved locally as a Patient Representative on the new CCG diabetes initiatives and they are basically trying to overturn the really poor results that Southampton has recently received in the National Audit. Seems things can be very patchy across the city but hopefully one day it will all be as good as I have been lucky enough to receive 🙂

Alan very impressed your real lucky there.

Spoke too soon! Just had a phone call to say that the podiatrist is off sick today so appt. cancelled :( Still, it's not urgent, and at least they phoned me before I set off! 🙂

Have had my feet checked once in 4 and a half years of being T1. :( And even then it wasn't a podiatrist checking my feet out! 😡

Will have to pester my Diabetes GP I think. 😉

Get my feet check every year. The appointment comes in the post and I trot along so she can tell me my right foot is a bit numb. However, everyone puts this down to arthritis not diabetes. Hope they are right.

You get good service in good old Soton. Used to live in that big block just outside the station.

I get my eyes done every year automatically although there's no telling where I might have to go.🙄 I have to pay to have my feet done though.😡

Kate, I also live in Essex. Standard annual checks should be done at your GP practice, but if you have foot problems your GP should refer you to SEPT podiatrists. They are very good once you get there. PM me if you need further info.
