Hoping to help their daughter, Abigail Joy, Jeff and Margaret Jackson decided to move from their home on Eau Claire's west side to the country in 2004.

That summer, they began knocking on doors one Saturday afternoon, looking for enough land to build a home, have a few horses and create an environment for 16-year-old Abby to heal.

Diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 9, Abby developed an eating disorder five years later, which led to a decline in her health and numerous hospitalizations in the years that followed.

Abby died on Sept. 11, 2005, seven days after her 18th birthday, as a result of an infection complicated by her diabetes. Her unexpected death left her family on the acres they had intended for her joy - land they call "Acres for Joy."
