An Indian American couple in Dallas, Texas, Satish and Yasmin Gupta, have donated $500,000 to the UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas to support genetic research on Type 2 diabetes among Indian Americans.

Asian Indians are a demographic group predisposed to early onset of the disease, according to medical data. The research will be done under Dr. Abhimanyu Garg, chief of the division of nutrition and metabolic diseases at UT Southwestern.

According to the Dallas Morning News, a study of up to 300 patients in the U.S. will be initiated to pinpoint the underlying causes for increased diabetes prevalence in this group.

“Rates of diabetes among immigrant Asian Indians are much higher than in indigenous populations,” Garg told the newspaper.
