PART of the massive restructuring of the NHS ? started three years ago by the Government ? has now come into force as Bolton Council takes over many of the public health roles previously fulfilled by NHS Bolton.

The council now has responsibility for a massive range of services ranging from reducing health inequalities, promoting sexual health, anti-smoking campaigns, and some aspects of mental and dental health.

Last June, Wendy Meredith, the then deputy regional director of public health at the Department of Health, was appointed to the role of director of public health at Bolton Council.

Since then, 65 NHS staff have been transferred to the authority.
