I seem to have the same teachers as you 🙂

Welcome to the forum @pace

How long have you been living with diabetes?

Do you take any medications to help with your glucose management?

Did your diabetes come out of the blue, or had it been building up over a while?

Is there anything that prompted you to join our online community at this time? Any questions you want to ask? Or just need to offload about some frustrations?

Hi , I did join this forum a 6 years ago but I was in another place at the time so I just drifted away.
Looking back I feel that my previous GP missed symptoms that if I had know about might have been able to alter my life style to the current issues I had then.

I managed to control my Diabetics Type 2 through diet and exercise. However , Covid struct me twice , one very early in the pandemic and I felt terrible for for a couple of weeks but then I was fine. In all honesty I have no one to blame regarding my slippage apart from myself. The second time around apart from knowing I was positive I had no symptoms at all until I had my forth jab ( OAPs booster ) and promptly slept for 24 hours. Since then I have been putting off jobs until next week and next week comes and I put the job off again.A little bit like ground hog day but I do keep fit.

My doctor's practice caught up with me and I decided that I had to see what condition I was in , some good news , lost 10 kg since last visit and blood pressure OK ish , bad new was that my previous 3 month blood test was 100 but I managed to reduce the level to 85.All my other functions satisfactory so I made a conscious decision that I had to radically change approach to diabetics.

Really cut down on my alcohol consumption to get down to 14 units a week but I am a determined sod and will achieve my target. I woke up in 1977 and decided that I would give up smoking and have to to date have never smoked again.

Food intake and really knowing what to eat does confuse me but hay ho I will learn ! No more sweet things and I have told all my friends my problem and they have been very supportive.

I do appreciate your questions and hope my scribing is not to boring. Any suggestions would be welcome.

My history teacher at O level wrote an absolute cracker of a comment in my last report before my exams..."I'm sure Neil has talent for the subject but, so far, he has contrived to hide it from me". I've often quoted that one over the years.

I got my O level and she was so pleased.

Sorry to hear your HbA1c has bumped up a bit, but well done for taking it down a little. And well done on the weight loss - that will certainly be helping.

Has your surgery suggested starting medication to help bring your levels down - I think it would be quite unusual not to have been offered something with an HbA1c in 3 figures.

Are you aiming for a reduction in your total carbohydrate intake to improve BG levels (reducing portions of starchy carbs as well as cutting out obviously sweet things)? Or are you aiming for calorie restriction?

Good luck with cutting back on alcohol intake too. There’s a bunch of empty calories and carbs there that you can be saving - not to mention the wider health benefits of cutting down on booze.
