I appear to be starting with an annoying cough, which is not normally a problem, I just pop a Ricola original Swiss herb drop in and the urge to cough goes away, easy. However now as a type 2, I obviously have to avoid such little parcels of sugar and herbs. Are there any similar sugar free cough sweets available? I have looked today and cannot find any.

Thanks.🙂

They do a sugar fee version.

They do? Where, not where I looked today! I was hoping they did, but did not find any.

Halls do sugar free too

Most of the Ricola are sugar free - I've got a nice cranberry flavour one now that I got for take off and landing when I went on holiday. Watch out for the Polyols though, they are full of them.

Sugar free sweets have polyols, which are carbohydrates and can act as laxatives. So, I tend to stick to normal cough sweets when preventing coughing is vital eg some aspects of work. At home, gargling with hot salty water is very effective, but not so practical away from home.

Then you are either buying a different product from me, or from a different place! o_O The packet I have here before me, says that per 100g, there are 98g carbohydrates, 72g of that is sugar. The others I saw the other day were the same. I have not looked in Holland and Barrett yet, but will do so, thanks for that Grovesy. I have also seen none of the other options as sugar free, but will look again. I also did not know about polyols counting as carbohydrates, but that would explain one thing. I do not care about the laxative effect however, because since being on the Metformin, I tend towards constipation. ( Least, I assume the Metformin is the cause... )

I do like the original Swiss herb drops, so they are as much a treat as a medicine. Maybe the odd one with care, as essential, as Copepod says...

Have a look on here - http://www.ricola.com/en-gb/Products - they have a mix on sugar free and non-sugar free flavours. The Cranberry ones i have give the nutritional values as this:

Per 100g: Energy 990kJ (235kcal), protein 0g, carbohydrate 97g (including sugar 0g, polyvalent alcohol 96g, starch 0g), fat 0g (including saturated fatty acids 0g), dietary fiber 0g, natrium 0g. Vitamin C 60mg: covers 75% of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI).

1 sweet (2.5g) = 25kJ (6 kcal)

The Polyols count as carbs whereas most sweeteners don't? But there's no sugar there.

The carbs in polyols aren't processed by the body therefore in theory, shouldn't raise blood sugars. They go straight out of the body, hence the laxative effect. I say in theory, as it has been known for polyols to raise some people's blood sugars.

I think I'd definitely keep an eye on it, because I have no idea whether it would or not. I'd only have one or two anyway to try and avoid the lax effect.

Thank you for that Beck S, I will look out for them, though not the Cranberry, I loathe the taste. Thanks for the explanation too Mike. 🙂

The box does have a warning in small print about the laxative effect states 10 in 1-2 HOURS. I don't usually need any where near that. I have been using Riccola Sugar free since diagnosis over 14 years.

Who would eat TEN in one to two hours? I would feel guilty eating Ten in 24 hours. Now especially. 😉
