Hello
I am new to monitoring (have been doing it for around 3 weeks). I find it very useful and have learned sooo much from your advice etc.
Unfortunately I have not been encouraged to monitor by my diabetic nurse (quite the opposite in fact). I want to continue, but am finding the experience rather expensive.
Can anyone tell me if the strips given by the nhs (providing they accept my plea for some) (not hopeful!!) would fit any monitoring machine. I have an SD Codefree. Thanks🙂

Its a fairly safe assumption that the test strips for any particular machine are specific to that make of meter. If you can manage to get your GP/nurse to get strips for you they will either have a preferred machine or it will be up to you to specify which machine you require strips for (there is little difference in strip price for the major manufacturers). I use 2 different monitors and have 2 different strips on repeat prescription.

The SD Codefree isn't listed on the BNF website so you may not be able to have those strips prescribed. It is generally more up to date these days but that's not guaranteed.

What do you actually pay for the strips? cos I know there are Abbott ones which are available on scrip and are fairly cheap to buy direct from them - something like ?12 odd for 50? (as opposed to around ?24-odd for some others) but also know there are other meters where you only pay about ?7-odd. That might be the one you are using? Dunno!

You'd have to ask what's on the prescribing list at your docs. Just thinking if you could get some of of them it may not be too bad supplementing them yourself?

Thanks Trophywench
I am using the sd code ... the strips are around ?7.00 for 50. I found them on amazon.
I will ask when I see the nurse 🙂

Well I can say that despite a first major hypo forme last week (0.9) and repeated high levels this week (18.3 & 17.8) my gp is still telling me I don't need to test.
Needless to say I'm going to invest in some strips for my meter tomorrow.

At the risk of diverting this thread, what did your GP say about those readings? why have you had a hypo on 1g metformin? This weeks readings are very high, I would say that your meds need serious adjustment (or your diet, but I can't believe your being naughty🙄)

Had to see a doc yesterday as the "vampire" was concerned about the 17.8 result yesterday morning. Just got my HbA1c and it's 61? Think that's around the 8 mark and have an appointment with my GP when I get back from holiday to discuss this. Have to admit to not being as good as I should be but not as bad as I used to be lol
