Is anyone feeling as scared as me. I have got myself in a bit of a two and eight. Anxiety gone through the roof

Hiya. What is it specifically you are scared of?

Hi, frightened if I get it won't be able to get over it and end up in hospital. Had diabetes for 46 years

I think, Arlo, we can't know how it will effect us. I have heard many people have had it and didnt even realise they got it! Others have had mild to severe flu like symptoms. and sadly some have died. But there are many many people who do get over it. We just have no idea how it will effect us personally. Im diabetic, pushing 60 and have asthma. But i try not to fret. What will be will be. We can only do what they suggest (and anything else we can think of to keep this at bay). We just have to be sensible. Think about whether we really need to be going out to the pub, club, seeing friends, going to busy places. And when we do, just be aware of our surroundings, washing hands whenever we can (thoroughly). Leave your shoes at the front door, dont wear slippers outside. Change towel/clothes each day. (little things like that) A little extra care. Keep indoors nice and clean, give surfaces and tinned foods a little wipe down when you bring it back from the shop. (Seems crazy but it wont do any harm).

Staying as well as we can with diet and exercise. Take a walk in the evening/ early morning, when no ones around. sit in the garden (if you have one) or the park if you dont, get some sun on your face.

Whilst we are stuck 'indoors' maybe think about doing those little odd jobs you have been putting off. (clear out that understairs/bedroom cupboard. Take up that book you have been promising yourself to read. I have been doing jigsaws puzzles (those's ones people bought me for birthday presents that i never got around to finishing, its been fun!) - I think we need to occupy ourselves whilst this is going on and try not to get too caught up in all the panic.

We can only do what we can do - its in the lap of the Gods!

Sorry to hear you have been feeling anxious @Arlo

I think the truth is that none of us can really know how this virus would affect us. But be encouraged... you’ve kept yourself well for 46 years which is an awesome achievement. Also, while we are at higher risk, there are still only a relatively small proportion of people with diabetes who will get severely ill with Covid-19 - it’s just that more PWD are likely to than nonnies.

We should just take reasonable precautions, wash hands frequently and follow emerging guidance around social distancing and isolation. And be particularly careful if you have had difficult experiences with intercurrent illness in the past.

It would be good to familiarise yourself Sick day rules, if you haven’t needed them for a while.
