Socialising over Christmas, particularly with those most vulnerable to Covid, will be “very risky” and threatens to put further pressure on hospital beds this winter, NHS bosses have warned.

Chris Hopson, the head of NHS Providers, which represents hospital trusts in England, said relaxing restrictions over the festive period would leave some people with the mistaken view that there was no greater risk from having more social contact.

“I don’t want to be the Grinch who stole Christmas, I really don’t, but I think everybody needs to think really, really carefully what are they going to do over Christmas,” Hopson told BBC Breakfast. “It’s not, ‘is what we’re going to be doing sticking within the rules?’ It’s ‘how much risk are we going to cause to the people we interact with?’”

The government delayed the first lockdown because they (mistakenly) believed that people wouldn't comply, but it turned out they overwhelmingly did when it came. Thousands died though :( The same happened before the second lockdown was pit in place, 6 weeks after the scientists advised it, over 20,000 more people have died :( Now they think people can't stick with restrictions because they fail to see the Christmas period as the overblown, commercialised and stressful event it usually is, but I suspect more would do if they hadn't been given the green light and mixed messages :( Cue January lockdown... 🙄

My concern is people continuing the relaxation of the rules well into the New Year and stretching them beyond the recommendations.
Apparently, following the Thanksgiving celebrations in the US, the cases exploded and deaths increased massively.
Now they are suggesting we should heat our houses but open windows to allow adequate ventilation. One MP has even asked for additional Govt funding to give people the means to do this! 😳

The US was warned by Canada too as they had the same at their Thanksgiving weeks earlier,

I think the damage is already done, with all the people cramming into the shops as soon as they opened again, with absolutely no thought for social distancing :(

I had to leave my job in a shop Sally71. As someone in the extremely vunerable grou it was impossible. The people I worked with as well as custmers had no idea about social distancing. It felt like because they were wearing masks they seemed to think that they were safe. I tried to speak to my boss and the company but i was told oh well its very difficult to social distance when there are several people working together. I know that a different place may have been safer. I don't blame shops for the increase. I just feel that so many people have not taken it seriously. We are having Christmas when its all over. Its not worth the risk, and my family feel a great deal of responsibility towards me.

I’m going to my daughter’s family for Christmas and I don’t think it’s risky at all. Because they have one kid at school and one in a nursery, they have all been tested depressingly regularly. We haven’t been out, or interacted with anyone who hasn’t been tested. And although Blackburn area is in Tier3, the Ribble Valley next door has a low incidence of Covid.

There’s a difference between paranoia and common sense. If anyone gets any symptoms before Christmas, the deal is off.
