Lodi was the first Italian province to report a case. It locked down on Feb 23rd with a handful of cases diagnosed (obviously, a lot more actual cases). Bergamo waited until Mar 8th.

Italy, with an older population than eg US/UK, will probably end up with a higher fatality rate, all else being equal. No surprise but interesting analysis.

As you say, that graph is saying that the more old people live in a country, the higher the death rate from coronavirus, so all the graph shows is the number of each age group living in a country.

A graph showing the rates for dementia and cancer would be similar. Being old is risky.
