This is from our diabetes team relating to kids but may be of use to adults too. There seems to be an increased insulin need for some children even above sick day rules if they get ill with corona virus.
“Corona Specific Advice
Children and young people with diabetes, who are otherwise fit and healthy, are not at greater risk of catching Covid-19 than any other child. However, the latest evidence suggests that children with diabetes who do develop symptoms of Covid-19 may have greatly increased insulin requirements. It is important to keep checking glucose and ketone levels regularly, giving additional fast-acting insulin (Novorapid or Humalog), as per the Sick Day Rules. However, in some cases, children may require further increased doses, particularly those who have a high HbA1c, so please contact us for support about further management if your child becomes unwell with symptoms that do not respond to the Sick Day Rules management. The out-of-hours telephone service is operating as normal, and there are always two nurses in the main office during working hours, so please do call with any query you may have.”
