I'll be another watching with keen interest!

Maybe the cure they've been looking for is just sloshing around in your very own DNA... Lets just hope balaclava'd Big Pharma scientists don't swoop down to try to extract it from you and/or destroy the evidence 😱

...Not being privy to your background, have you definitely had your type confirmed? You can't be honeymooning but there's no way a T1 should be able to have normal blood sugars with no insulin intake. You could potentially have LADA or even completely mis-dxed T2.

Might do a couple of ketone tests just to see what happens. 🙂

I was diagnosed when I went into A&E with DKA - very touch and go, although I hadn't realised it at the time. Although diagnosed as T1, my consultant is pretty sure I'm LADA. I had symptoms for around 18-24 months prior to diagnosis, and the consultant thinks that my regular running probably helped make best use of the insulin I was producing. Seems like after nearly 4 years of recovery, during which my insulin doses have been dropping, I'm getting back to something similar to pre-diagnosis although probably not quite as good. On a normal day I still need around 15-20 units of novorapid to deal with the carbs I eat etc.

Consultant would like to have me tested for C-Peptide but can't justify the cost as it would not lead to any change in medication or alter my situation at all.

Good old costs again hey?🙄

I have been no carb for almost 2 weeks now.

I am following it for weight loss reasons, and my blood sugars have never been better.

I have had one hypo at the weekend there (only a 3.6 though) but it was after my daughter nearly choked on something and think it was a reaction to my absolute panic too!!!

However I still take my basal insulin at bedtime (Lantus 13u), but for mealtimes I have barely any carbs. Of course I still have some (the diet aims for 20-30g a day) so still need very small amounts of insulin with my meals - I just test and inject as normal. On busier days I take less as walking about lowers my BG too.

I do have ketones present, because I am in ketosis to burn off fat. That is not a dangerous state to be in. I bought wee sticks to check it, and can check on my BG meter too - they aren't rising. It takes about 3-4 days of low/no carb to get into ketosis though so I think 1 day will be fine.

You will however feel pretty tired and lethargic while your body adjusts to no carbs as it will crave them and make you hungry!!

I have some good recipes if you want any hints and tips! I for one will watch with interest - good luck! 🙂

I mentioned a no carb diet to the dietician at my diabetes course this morning...she was mortified!

Again it's the good old NHS saying to eat carbs. I say do what ever works for you!
As long as you are careful, what's the harm! You seem pretty clued up on your diabetes Northie, so I think you would be pretty safe 🙂

Yes, it's only going to be for a day - I couldn't live without my carbs! 🙂

I was on a DAPHNE pump course last week and they were positively encouraging carb-free meals / days as a means of basal testing. Obviously this was implying some basal going in, but you clearly no the risks.... And the precautions to take....

What's a lada?

Cheek! :D It's a good point about basal testing - I'll be testing my 'homegrown' basal! 🙂

Really fascinating stuff Alan - I will miss your experiment but will catch up on my return - unless you make the national headlines before then with some pharmaceutical company or The Lancet expressing great interest in you for medical research!
