Given that I no longer seem to need my lantus I have been toying with the idea of having a carb-free - and therefore novorapid/injection-free - day 😱

It wouldn't be a complete day off from diabetes because I'd want to test regularly, but the experiment appeals 🙂

What do people think?

I can't imagine a meal without carbs let alone a whole day lol:D

But you have enough nounce to make it work, so I say go for it.

No carbs? really? i thought you need carbs?....wow so much still to learn.....my d/b nurse wanted to no how i lost so much weight within 3 months i told her pot noodeles and don't eat!!! and lamb lol

It'd be very interesting to see how you got on Alan and if your levels would continue to behave 🙂

You must think there is some insulin production to do that? Before you were diagnosed you couldn't digest carbs at all otherwise you wouldn't have had DKA - I wonder what has turned it back on again? You really should donate yourself for scientific purposes! - best of luck with the trials.

I must have since I don't need the basal - my level was 5.3 before bed last night and 5.1 when I woke this morning. So, I'd just be interested in seeing what would happen if I avoided carbs for the day. As I said, I would test frequently to check what was happening, so it would be safe 🙂

Sounds like an interesting experiment and if you can manage omlettes, meat and jelly for a day then give it a go, would be very interesting to see how your body reacts!

Go for it I found today Hartleys Mango and Passion fruit Jelly only had 3gramb cars or near enough so had no insulin to cover it compared to havn the Pinnaplle 1 yest at Lunch Just an idea for you
best of luck

Very interesting Alan - I think as long as you test regularly and stay safe.
You won't know unless you try it! But please stay safe!🙂

Don't worry folks, I will be very careful if I do decide to go for it. I imagine the trickiest bit is going to be in the mornings as my levels normally rise a bit if I don't inject and eat - I've never actually tried not injecting and eating a non-carb breakfast to see whether that switches off the rise! Also, not sure about exercise on the day.

Watch this space! 🙂

Am thinking of changing my name to Halle Berry...:D

It would certainly be interesting but please take care

When do you plan to try it Alan?🙂

I cant see any major issues with giving this a shot, the paleodiet is apparently the healthiest out there. just be careful mate.

One thing you need to consider here is beyond blood sugar.

DKA happens when your body doesn't have enough insulin. This is actually rather different from high blood sugar - you could theoretically have normal blood sugar but still be in DKA.

The obvious thing to check for would be ketones, but of course this raises another problem. If you are 'no-carbing', your body will produce ketones anyway through ketosis (which is a different thing to DKA). Therefore you'll have no way of knowing whether ketones in your urine are from benign ketosis or malignant DKA. If your BGs go up a lot then it's safe to say you'll need to stop the experiment and start taking some insulin again.

Not being privy to your background, have you definitely had your type confirmed? You can't be honeymooning but there's no way a T1 should be able to have normal blood sugars with no insulin intake. You could potentially have LADA or even completely mis-dxed T2.

Given that my rebellious boy goes the odd 24 hours without ANY insulin whatsoever and is still walking about, I say give it a go!

Seriously though, it would be really interesting to see what happens and in your position I would give it a try, especially given that you can/will test regularly. It really is interesting. I get so intrigued by all this, it really is interesting. I can't believe my boy can carry on as he is and not show signs of being very unwell. He is skipping at least one injection per day and still appears to be functioning.

Don't get me wrong, I know what he is doing is so wrong and just plain stupid, but I am letting him get on with it now. Clinic next week so very interested to see what happens there. He hasn't tested for over a month, so no idea what's going on.

Good luck in your experiment though. Await the results with interest.
