Hi again, can anyone explain. I have been told by my surgery that my score is 49 so I am diabetic but a score under 50 won't be medicated. That doesn't really make sense to me. Have a consultation in couple of weeks with diabetic nurse but wondered if anyone could explain

With a hba1c of 49, lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise should be enough to improve your result without needing medication.

Thank you for your reply. Will be writing down a list of questions to ask at my next appointment

Hi. Imo it is a great idea to take a list of questions with you ( it I’ll be a good idea to take a bag with you incase you are handed a bundle of leaflets ) , but their is no reason why you can’t start asking those questions here.
So please fire away as we will be only happy to help based on what has worked for us.

With an HbA1C of 49 initially giving medication would be like using a sledge hammer to crack a hazel nut and with some minor changes to your diet, reducing some of the higher carbohydrate foods and cutting out added sugar, cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks and increasing exercise, also losing some weight if you need to will be sufficient to bring you back into a non diabetic zone (less than 42mmol/mol).
This will help you find a way of eating that you can maintain having foods and meals you enjoy as this has to be a long term lifestyle to avoid the complications of high blood glucose.

Totally agree. Personally I would always prefer to use medication as the last resort unless clinically indicated. As others have said you may be able to sort this through diet and lifestyle. It's worth trying. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum!

If you would like a good overview of T2 diabetes, to add to the knowledge you’ve already picked up, members here frequently recommend Maggie Davey’s Letter and Gretchen Becker’s book T2 Diabetes, the first year, which you can work through gradually and will give you a solid starting point.

Ask away with any questions you have. We have centuries of lived diabetes experience on the forum, and nothing will be thought of as ‘silly’.
