Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all. Was diagnosed 8 weeks ago with Type 2. Count of 51 though not sure exactly how bad or good that is. I find that the internet has confused me even more as there seems so much contradictory advice out there, particularly in regards to what should be eaten.

Hi

The result of 51 will be your HbA1c blood test - anything in excess of 48 = diabetes. Yours is only a wee bit over the threshold so shouldn't take to much effort to reduce that. The main food your body has trouble dealing with is carbohydrate. As sugar itself contains almost 100% carb that's the very first thing to cut down on or if possible eliminate entirely, eg stop having sugar in tea/coffee, drink 'Diet' pop and mixers. But it's ALL carb, not ONLY sugar. So reduce the amount of eg bread, spuds, pasta and rice, rather than cut them all out of your diet instantly in one fell swoop.

(There are all sorts of 'food hacks' like 'fake' rice using cauliflower, or mashed cauli instead of mashing potatoes, making sweet potato 'chips', spiralised courgette instead of spaghetti and all sort of other things people try - but you may not need to go that far - unless you want and need to!)

Welcome to the forum @Funtime

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and that you have been a bit confused by some of the things you’ve read online.

51 is only a little over the threshold for a diagnosis with T2, so as @trophywench says, it may only take some modest tweaks to your diet to allow your body to cope better with the carbs you are eating.

Unfortunately there’s no ‘one size fits all’ dietary approach that will work for everyone, and different people can cope with greater amounts of carbohydrate than others. And as @trophywench suggests, while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

That’s not to say you can‘t have any of those things any longer, but a reduction in portion sizes might really help. 🙂
