Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hi!! Okay so I have recently had some bloods done HbA1c and it has come back at 42. My confusion is that when I asked to be tested the doctor said I already had & it was normal I said that I have symptoms (thirst, peeing) so she agreed and came back pre-diabetes. My symptoms started in September & I had had bloods done then although I don’t recall seeing that specific test on the sheet. My last lot were 28/12. I have terrible trouble with body temperature & I get hot very quickly & have hot flashes too. Does pre-diabetes cause symptoms? I’ve also put on a vast amount of weight in just under 2 years & suffer with chronic urticaria and idiopathic angioedema although at present is under control. I also have low functioning kidneys which was concluded to be ‘normal’ for me! They are currently at 54gfr and I am 40! I have an appointment on Monday with the practice nurse. Any thoughts would be appreciated

Hi and welcome to the forum. If your HbA1c was only 42 then that is the bottom level of pre-diabetic so I would be surprised if you were having all those symptoms. I could be completely wrong but am just wondering whether you could be having early menopause with the hot flushes etc, it might be worth mentioning to the GP.
The HbA1c is a test that covers the previous 12 weeks of blood glucose in your blood so should be correct so I personally would be inclined to go back to the doctors and ‘make a nuisance of myself’ to get your symptoms investigated further. Good luck and best wishes. Sue

My Hbaic is also 42, but I was far higher abut without obvious symptoms - I realise now that I feel so much better that I was affected but not all that badly. I do feel a lot younger than I did so I expect that the type two just crept up over some considerable time.
Symptoms do seem very variable, but if you are unable to deal with carbs very well, eating low carb should help push things back to a better situation. Low carb is not necessarily high protein, though some people see that as the only option rather than high fat, which is so daemonized, but so many find they feel so much better on it.

Hi Sue,
They have checked for menopause as that’s what I thought it was originally but they’ve said it’s not.

Hi again, if it’s not early menopause then as I said previously I would definitely keep going back to the GP until they find out what it is, I can’t think that they are related to diabetes other than thirst and urinating a lot but if you are only at 42 I would be surprised if it was this.
I’m not medically trained so can’t advise more really but I do work in a GP surgery and if you firmly but nicely keep going back they will investigate further as this is obviously affecting your day to day living. Good luck and maybe if you find out what the problem is you could post further just so we know you are ok. Sue x
